1846 Exhibited a model of his "Archimedean" railway at the Polytechnic Institution; this system was propelled using a screw composed of thin blades, fixed between the rails, from 18in. to 24in. diameter. The screw propeller was caused to revolve by steam or other power applied at suitable intervals, the blades pressing against a pair of wheels suspended from the leading carriage. Mr. Farrell proposed to have 20 horsepower stationary engines three miles apart[1]
