John Alfred Prestwich (1874–1952) of J. A. Prestwich Industries and Pencils was an English engineer and inventor.
1874 Born at Kensington the son of William Henry Prestwich, a Photographer, and his wife Elizabeth
1891 Living at Warrington House, High Road, Tottenham (age 16 born Kensington), an Electrical Engineer Apprentice. With his parents William Henry (age 59 born Prestwich, Lancs), a Photographer and his wife Elizabeth (age 50 born - ), and his siblings Edward Percival (age 20), a Photographer; Robert (age 15); Frank Milton (age 11); Edith (age 23); Eva Helen (age 18); Evelyn Elizabeth (age 17), Mabel May (age 9). Plus a visitor and a servant. [1]
1891 Tottenham and Edmonton Industrial Exhibition. 'There is a case containing designs in foreign stamps, and over it hangs some mechanical drawings by John A. Prestwich; this boy sends also a model of a steam engine and an electric bell, and considering that he is only 15 years of age, the work is exceedingly creditable to him.'[2]
1895 He founded the company J. A. Prestwich Industries and was a pioneer in the early development of cinematography projectors and cameras. The company also manufactured its famous JAP engines.
He worked with Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti and later the cinema pioneer William Friese-Greene.
1901 Living at 30 St. Paul's Road, Tottenham (age 26 born Kensington), an Optician and Employer. With his wife Amelia (age 24 born Stretford, Lancs) and their son John V. (age 1 born Tottenham). Also one servant. [3]
1911 Living at 3 Lansdowne Road, Tottenham (age 36 born Kensington), Engineer (Motor Manufacturer) and Employer. With his wife Eleanor (age 34 born Manchester) and their children Alfred Arthur (age 8 born Tottenham), Edward Stuart (age 4 born Tottenham) and Roland Dudley (age 1 born Tottenham). Also two servants. It states that they have been married twelve years and have four children, all living. [4]
He was awarded the Edward Longstreth Medal by the Franklin Institute in 1919
1951 Chairman and MD of J. A. Prestwich Industries and Chairman of Pencils. Living at Coltishall, 35 Broad Walk, Winchmore Hill, London. [5]
