J. D. Russell, BSc, AIM, MWeldl graduated from Birmingham University in Metallurgy in 1959. Since then he has been concerned with a wide range of welding processes at a number of different organisations. His postgraduate career started with Murex Welding Processes Ltd where he was involved in the development of the submerged arc process.

Subsequently with the Reactor Fuel Element Laboratories, UKAEA he was concerned with the TIG and electron beam processes.

Later with the CEGB his interests had a more metallurgical bias associated with welding problems in power plant. Since joining The Welding Institute he has been mainly interested in the development of the high-energy density processes—electron and laser beams and is currently head of the section responsible for these processes.
