
John Deane Tilney (1841-1909)
Railway Man., Locomotive Superintendent of the Cape Government Railway.
1909 Died ay Bedford. 'The death occurred on Thursday of last week at Bedford of Mr John Deane Tilney. Deceased was the son of Mr Thomas Tilney, of Cane Colony, and spent his early days at Aberystwyth. He was educated at Bradfield College, Berks, qualified as a civil engineer, and went to South Africa where he served under the Cape Government as chief locomotive superintendent for the Cape Government Railways. In 1898 he was appointed a member of the Midland and Border Departmental Railways Commission by the Cape Government for assistance in conveyance of troops during the South African War. He was awarded the Queen's South African Boer War medal and before he retired in 1903 he received the imperial service order in recognition of his Services'[1]
