J. H. Lamble, MEng, PhD, DSc, FRINA, FWeldl, FRSA, Fellow, is Reader in the Strength of Materials at UMIST, a Martell Scholar, 1851 Exhibition Royal Commissioners' Postgraduate Scholar in Naval Architecture, Munitions Fellow and a Commonwealth Fund Fellow. His early work was on skin friction and wake of ships at the Universities of Liverpool and Michigan.

Later he worked on fatigue, photoelasticity and stress analysis at UMIST and he is the author of some 50 papers and articles in these fields. A Past-President of the Manchester Association of Engineers, he was for 14 years editor of The Bulletin of Mechanic Engineering Education and is now Joint Editor of the new International Journal of Mechanical Engineering Education.
