J. H. Venners of Venners Cigarette Machine Co
1898 'Mr. J. H. Venners, a native of Birmingham, has invented a cigarette machine, which he has named after himself. In the ordinary steady way of working it makes 530 to 600 cigarettes per minute, of all sizes, oval or round, but if extra speed is applied, can produce even 800 per minute. By the use of this machine it is claimed that the cost of making cigarettes is reduced to under 2d. per 1,000. The consumption of cigarettes in the United Kingdom alone is estimated at about 8,000,000,000 per annum.'[1]
