J. M. Alexander, DSc (Eng), PhD, FCGI, FlProdE, FIM, Fellow, was educated at Ipswich School and City and Guilds College (Imperial College, London University).
His practical training was at Ransomes, Sims and Jeffries Ltd, and later continued with the City and Guilds College where he was a researcher.
He then became Head of the Metal Deformation Section of Aluminium Laboratories Ltd, and Head of the Mechanical Engineering Research Laboratories and Nuclear Reactor Mechanical Design at English Electric.
From 1957-63 he was, Reader in Plasticity at the University of London, and for the next six years he was their Professor of Engineering Plasticity. From 1968-71 he was Vice-President of the Institute of Metals, and since 1969 he has been Professor of Applied Mechanics at Imperial College.
