Mr. Fairs received his education at Hensworth Grammar School and at Wakefield Technical College. He joined the drawing office staff of Hyland, Ltd., Marine Engineers, in 1937. He held the position of Technical Assistant to the General Manager when Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd., acquired Hyland, Ltd., in 1952, and during 1952 he was appointed Technical Manager of the Wakefield works of Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd., which specialize in the design and manufacture of hydraulic deck machinery and hydraulic steering gears.
