Dr. Fitchie served an apprenticeship with the Preston Gas Company, after which he proceeded to University College, London, where he graduated with first class honours and obtained the Diploma of Engineering, with distinction.

He then joined the Research Laboratory, Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Derby, and for four and a half years worked on experimental stress analysis, later being in charge of the research laboratory.

After a period with the English Electric Company as assistant mechanical and structural test engineer in the aircraft division, he became Clayton Fellow at Manchester University, where he worked for two and a half years, being awarded the Ph.D. degree for research on fatigue and stress analysis.

In 1950 he was appointed to his present position with the Mechanical Engineering Research Organization, D.S.I.R., working initially at the National Physical Laboratory, and subsequently at East Kilbride in the Properties and Mechanics of Materials Division.

Dr. Fitchie holds a Physical Metallurgy Certificate, First Class, and is registered with the Automobile Division.
