J. W. Pirie

"Mr J. W. Pirie has been elected president of the Association of Mining Electrical and Mechanical Engineers for 1966-1967. Mr. Pirie served his apprenticeship at Murray and Paterson Ltd., Coatbridge, Lanark, where he became leading draughtsman before transferring to the Fife Company in 1936 as chief draughtsman. Later as works manager he was in full charge of the company's central workshops and also performed the duties of chief mechanical engineer of the company in respect of its sixteen collieries, central power-station and brickworks.
In 1947 Mr. Pirie was appointed area chief mechanical engineer of the Fife and Clackmannan area of the Scottish division of the National Coal Board and later was appointed area chief mechanical engineer of the Fife area and then of the West Fife area.
In April 1952 he was appointed divisional chief mechanical engineer of the Scottish division and deputy divisional chief engineer (reconstruction) in January, 1957, when he was made responsible to the reconstruction director for the mechanical, electrical and civil engineering aspects of all new-sinking and major reconstruction work throughout the division. Since September, 1958, he has been divisional chief engineer.
Mr. Pirie is an Associate Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Member of the Institution of Mining Engineers and Council Member of the Mining Institute of Scotland."
