1857 Founded by John Howie.[1]
1858 '...feeding-troughs for byres, invented by William Smith, manager, Hurlford Fireclay Works, and made by John Howie, Hurlford, Kilmarnock'[2]
1867 J. and R. Howie formed when John Howie's brother Robert joined the firm.[1]
1886 Purchased the nearby Plann Brick and Tile Works.[1]
1886 'J.& R. Howie, Hurlford Fireclay Works, Kilmarnock, show at their stand baths, sinks, wash-tubs, and milk coolers, together with enamelled ventilating sanitary traps, horse mangers, cattle troughs, patent filters, and several kinds of bricks manufactured at their works.'[3]
1927 Death of Thomas Wyllie Howie age 72 years, of the company. Long obituary.[4]
1938 'Minutes of Agreement and made between the late Hugh Robert Wallace and John Howie, now vested in J. & R. Howie Ltd., of Hurlford Fireclay Works, Kilmamock, that is to say:— all the fireclays and ironstone within an area of approximately 310 acres situated in the Civil Parish of Kilmaurs, in the County of Ayr.'[5]
1949 Acquired by William Baird and Co.[6]
1965 Sold to Shanks and Co.[7]
1981 Ceased trading[8]
