1935 'In order to demonstrate the seaworthiness of an all-steel canoe, which he is able to manufacture to sell at £5, its inventor, Mr. Arthur John Pouncy, of Wareham, Dorset, made a successful unaccompanied double crossing of the Channel on Thursday. To do so he fitted a 4-h.p. outboard engine vertically through well in the centre of the hull, which enables him to sail at 6 m.p.h. He left Dover at 8.15 a.m., reached Calais piers at 1.35 p.m., and arrived back in the Harbour at about 8 o'clock. Fearing some mishap might have befallen the canoeist, Mr. Walker sent one of his motor boats out at five o'clock, but after a two hour search it came back intending to go out again if necessary. Last Thursday, Mr. Pouncy sailed round the Isle of Wight, where conditions were very bad- Yesterday, the Channel was in one of its pleasant moods, and the crossings were made quite comfortably. Next Spring Mr. Pouncy intends to sail the South Coast and cross to the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands in order to bring his canoes before the public. Its dimensions are 12ft. by 2ft. Bins., and the weight 641bs. It can have sails, or be propelled by a paddle.'[1]
1936 'Arthur John Pouncy, of St. John’s Hill, Wareham (Dorset), crossed to Douglas from Amlwch (Anglesey) in a 15 foot canoe yesterday. He left Amlwch at 8-10 a.m. and arrived at Douglas at 3-55 p.m. He was alone and made the voyage with the aid of a 11 h.p. motor. The sea was fairly smooth, but there were heavy rain and patches of fog. A compass enabled him to reach his destination. Pouncy will be spectator of the Manx Grand Prix to-day which Is the prime reason for his visit He will return to-morrow by canoe if the weather is fit, but otherwise by steamer.'[2]
