"JAMES ALEXANDER ANDERSON, whose death occurred at Kiln Road, Tring, Herts, on 24th November 1947, was associated with the manufacture of sugar factory machinery during the earlier part of his career and was well known in that industry.
He was born in 1884 and studied for six years at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow. His apprenticeship was served in Glasgow, first with Messrs. Alley and McLellan and later with the Mirrlees Watson Company, Ltd., makers of sugar machinery, during the years 1898-1903.
After brief appointments as junior draughtsman to two engineering firms in the same district he came to London in 1907 and began a long connection with the Sugar Machinery Manufacturing Company, Ltd., with the post of inspector of outside work. Two years later he was placed in charge of the drawing office and in 1916 was appointed technical manager. He became managing director in 1921 with the control of all departments, retaining, however, his particular responsibility for the technical side of the business. Eight years later he resigned office and from 1929 to 1935 was the proprietor of a motor garage. After a short engagement in the drawing office of Messrs. Foster Wheeler, Ltd., makers of oil refinery machinery, London, he took up an appointment as technical engineer in the engineering contracts department of Messrs. The New Consolidated Goldfields, Ltd., London. Mr. Anderson was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1919 and was transferred to Membership in 1926."
