1861 James Barr 37, water meter maker, lived in Kilmarnock with Barboura Barr 32, Margaret Barr 9, John Barr 6, James Barr 3, Ellen Barr 4[1]

1866 Patent to Thomas Kennedy, junior, and James Barr, both of Kilmarnock, in the county of Ayr, North Britain, Engineers, for the invention of "improvements in pistons and cylinders."[2]

1881 James Barr 57, Manager Hydraulic Engineer, lived in Shaw St, Glenfield East, Kilmarnock, with Barbara Barr 52, John Barr 26, secretary of Glenfield Iron Co, James Barr 23, Hydraulic Engineer, Ellen Barr 20, William Barr 14, apprentice machinist, Barbara Barr 9[3]

1894 Died in Kilmarnock aged 70 years; his son James Barr (b.1857), hydraulic and mechanical engineer, died 9th August 1897 aged 40 years[4]
