James Benjamin Gifford (1820-1886) of Gifford, Fox and Co and Holyrood Lace Mill, Chard

1820 March 12th. Born at Lopen, Somerset, the son of James Gifford and his wife Mary Brown.

1871 Living at Parklands Chard: James Benjamin Gifford (age 57 born Lopen), Lace Manufacturer and Land Owner. With his wife Mary J. and two daughters.[1]

1880 Left the partnership of Gifford, Fox and Co

1886 October 03rd. Died at Chard. 'Mr James Benjamin Gifford, whilst out shooting on his estate at Chard on Saturday evening was suddenly taken ill, and has since expired. Deceased for many years was one of the largest employers of labour in the district, being senior partner of the well-known firm of lace manufacturers, Gifford, Fox, and Co., Chard and Nottingham. He retired some time since in favour of his son, On Saturday morning the deceased visited Holyrood mills and appeared better than usual. He was one of the leading Nonconformists of the county, and contributed liberally to local institutions. He leaves a son and daughter.'[2]
