James Edward Brown, who died on the 10th December, 1951, was born on the 23rd March, 1878. He received his engineering education at Stockport and Manchester Technical Institutes, and his practical training with Richardson and Herbert, Manchester, and Charles Richardson, Romiley. From 1899 to 1901 he was Works Foreman with Charles Richardson. He then spent a year as Chief Electrical Engineer with the Frodingham Steel and Iron Co., Lincs.

In 1903 he joined the staff of the National Boiler and General Insurance Co. For the first year he was an Electrical Inspecting Engineer; he was then appointed Assistant Electrical Engineer and Surveyor of Electrical Plant (1905), and Chief Assistant Electrical Engineer (1907). In 1926 he became Chief Electrical Engineer, and he held that office until his retirement in 1945. For some years he was a part-time lecturer at the Manchester College of Technology.

He joined The Institution as an Associate Member in 1907 and was elected a Member in 1936.
