James Fortt

From Graces Guide

of Manvers Street, Bath, maker of Bath Oliver biscuits

1735 The "Original" Bath Oliver Biscuit was invented by Dr. Oliver, who was at that time physician to the Bath Mineral Water Hospital. He developed the biscuit as a novelty but also a luxury, and an aid to digestion.

1764 On the death of Dr Oliver the secret of the composition of the biscuit was bequeathed to his coachman, who took a small shop in Green Street, Bath, and became its sole manufacturer.

Eventually it came into the hands of Mr Fortt who, for many years, carried on the manufacture in the "original" house. The premises, however, had to be constantly enlarged, and a large factory equipped with every modern improvement was added in Manvors Street.
