JAMES FOYELL LOVELOCK CROSLAND was born in Leeds on 9th March 1840, and served his apprenticeship at the locomotive works of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway.
On its completion he practised as a consulting engineer in collaboration with his father who had many patents relating to fuel economy, improved methods of compounding steam-engines, superheated steam, high-pressure steam, and the triple-expansion engine.
In 1864 he joined the Boiler Assurance Co., now the Vulcan Boiler and General Insurance Co., Ltd., and was appointed Chief Engineer of the Company in 1888.
This position he held until his retirement in 1912.
His death took place at his residence in Hale, Cheshire, on 21st October 1918, at the age of seventy-eight.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1881.

JAMES FOYELL L. CROSLAND was born in Leeds on the 9th March, 1840, and served his apprenticeship in the locomotive works of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway.
On completing his apprenticeship he practised as consulting engineer in collaboration with his father, who had many patents relating to fuel economy, superheated and high-pressure steam, and compound and triple-expansion engines ; and prior to 1863 he advocated the triple-expansion engine with steam pressures of 150 to 200 lb. per square inch.
In 1864 he joined the Boiler Assurance Company, now the Vulcan Boiler and General Insurance Company, Ltd., and was appointed Chief Engineer of the Company in 1888. He retired from that position in 1912.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1900.
