"JAMES GALLOWAY, who was born in 1883, began a course of technical training (which extended in all to twenty years) at the Barrow-in-Furness Technical School, in 1896. Later he studied at Armstrong and Rutherford Colleges, Newcastle upon Tyne, and finally attended classes at the Municipal College of Technology in Manchester. He served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Vickers, Ltd., at Barrow, from 1896 to 1903, in whose employment he continued as junior draughtsman in the marine engine department for a further two years. After ten years as leading draughtsman to Messrs. Hawthorn, Leslie, and Company, Ltd., of Newcastle upon Tyne, he was appointed works manager to the Trussed Concrete Steel Company, Ltd., of Manchester, and began a long association with that firm, which continued until his retirement in 1946. Mr. Galloway, whose death occurred on 11th March 1947, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1918."
