James Harold Atherton was born in 1880 and received his technical education at Liverpool University.

After serving for four years as assistant chemical engineer with Geo. Scott & Son (London), Ltd., he became, in 1903, sole Proprietor and Works Manager of the Addison Motor Co, Liverpool, until 1918, when a Limited Company was formed of which he was Managing Director.

He died on March 29th, 1923.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1919.
