JAMES HARRY BAKER spent the whole of his career with the Great Western Railway, commencing with his apprenticeship at Swindon works from 1888-1895.
After three years in the works drawing office he was transferred to the engineer's drawing office, eventually taking charge of the structural section.
He was later transferred to the permanent-way department at Reading and during the last period of his life was in the office of the Chief Engineer at Paddington.
Mr. Baker also lectured for many years to the applied mechanics evening class held in connexion with Reading University, and was keenly interested in geology.
He became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1923 and his death occurred on 2nd November 1930 at the age of 56.
