"JAMES HORACE SHEPHERD, Wh.Ex., was identified with the former Great Western Railway throughout his professional career.
He was born in 1870, and received his education at University College, Bristol, where he obtained a Whitworth Exhibition. In 1888 he became a pupil in the locomotive works of the Great Western Railway at Swindon. On the completion of his articles his services were retained in the drawing office, and in 1902 he was made assistant to the works manager, a position he filled until his retirement from the company's service on superannuation in 1935. Mr. Shepherd's long association with the Institution dated back to 1892 when he was elected a Graduate. He was transferred to Associate Membership in 1905. During the South African war of 1899-1902 he saw service in the ranks. His death occurred on 6th March 1950."
