JAMES JOSEPH DEVINE, whose death in his fifty-fifth year occurred on 14th February 1944, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1921. After serving his apprenticeship from 1904 to 1909 in the marine and locomotive works of the Manchester Ship Canal Company and with the Dublin Dockyard Company, he went to sea as marine engineer, rising from second to chief engineer.
In 1917 he was commissioned sub-lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and saw service in the East on board H.M. seaplane carrier Empress. On demobilization in 1920 Mr. Devine joined the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation, Ltd., and remained with them as engineer surveyor until the close of his career.
