James Martineau (1805–1900), Unitarian minister.

1805 Born in Norwich on 21 April, the seventh child of a middle-class merchant family, brother of Harriet Martineau, the writer. His father, Thomas (1764–1826), youngest son of Sarah Martineau, was a cloth manufacturer; his mother was Elizabeth Rankin (1770/71–1848), the eldest daughter of the grocer and sugar refiner Robert Rankin of Newcastle upon Tyne.
