James Moncur
James Moncur ( -1933), County Surveyor for Staffordshire
1933 Died. 'We regret to record that the death occurred at his residence residence 24, Rowley Bank, Stafford, this morning, of Mr. James Moncur, former County Surveyor for Staffordshire, who was actively associated with that department for 39 years. He had been in failing health, for some time. A native of Forfarshire. Scotland. Mr. Moncur began his career there as District Surveyor. He was appointed Chief Surveyor of Main Roads in Staffordshire when the County Council was formed in 1890, and upon the retirement in 1910 of Mr. W. H. Cheadle he became County Surveyor. Tins position he occupied until September, 1929. when, upon his retirement he was succeeded by Mr. R. Murt, the present County Surveyor. Mr. Moncurs son. Mr. James Moncur. jun., was appointed Deputy County Surveyor. During Mr. Moncur's association with the county, many important road schemes were carried out, and an enormous change effected in the character of the county roads.'[1]
