James Morton (1867-1943)

James Morton (1867-1943) of Morton Sundour Fabrics, Scottish Dyes, ICI.

1867 Born, son of Alexander Morton (1844-1923) who was a pioneer in the Irvine Valley lace curtain industry.

He became of the first to deliver colour fastness in materials.

WWI Because colour dyes were no longer available from Germany, he started his own business Scottish Dyes to supply dyes, including development of new colours. Despite lack of experience and difficulties in obtaining chemical plant, production commenced within a few months at Carlisle.

By 1919 the company had been so successful that a site at Grangemouth was bought.

During the critical years of 1920-21, Scottish Dyes kept going

1926 Morton became a director of ICI when it absorbed his dyes company.

1936 Knighted for his public services

1939 Sir James Morton, textile manufacturer, lived in Carlisle with Beatrice E Morton[1]

1943 Died in Carlisle
