1824 September 18th. Born in Frome the son of Joseph Oxley, Maltster and Cooper, and his wife Eliza. Baptised 1829/09/30 with five siblings.

1851 Living at Welshmill, Frome: James Oxley (age 27 born Frome), Vat Maker and Maltster employing 25 men. With his wife Eliza Ellen Oxley (age 23 born Shaftsbury) and their daughter Ellen Adelaide Oxley (age one month born Frome). Also his nephew William Oxley (age 4 born Holborn, Mddx.). One visitor.[1]

1852 Birth of son James Abbott Oxley

For a period he was the proprietor of Butts Hill Iron Works, but it is not clear whether this was his only works in Frome.

1871 Living at Millards Hill, Frome: James Oxley (age 47 born Frome), Engineer employing 150 to 200 men. With his wife Ellen Oxley (age 42 born Shaftsbury) and their eight children; James Oxley (age 18 born Frome), Apprentice; Constance Oxley (age 15 born Frome); Lucy Oxley (age 12 born Frome); Florence Oxley (age 10 born Frome); Adelaide Oxley (age 9 born Frome); Edith Oxley (age 5 born Frome); Eugenie Oxley (age 3 born Frome); and Grace Oxley (age 1 born Frome). Six servants.[2]

Oxley (age 52 born Shaftsbury) and their five daughters; Florence Oxley (age 20 born Frome), Governess; Adelaide Oxley (age 19 born Frome), Governess; Edith Oxley (age 15 born Frome); Eugenie Oxley (age 13 born Frome); and G. B. Oxley (age 11 born Frome). Two servants.[3]
