James Reid (1833-1910) telegraph contractor, civil engineer.

1833 Born in London, son of William Reid and his wife Jane. Baptised at Old Church, St Pancras in 1834[1]

Apprenticed under Mr W. Reid, which business presumably became William Reid

1851 William Reed 53, Engineer, lived in Tottenham Court Road, with Jane Reed 48, Jane H Reed 28, William Reed 26, Helen W Reed 23, Robert N Reed 21, Mary A Reed 19, James Reed 17, Matilda Reed 15, Hannah Reed 12[2]

From 1852 Superintended the erection of telegraph lines including those from London to the North, Glasgow, etc. Also superintended the erection of lines in France and Belgium. Also involved in the testing of the Atlantic Cable during its construction.

1859 of 25 University Street, Bedford Sq, London, was proposed as an Associate of the Institution of Civil Engineers

1861 William Reid, 37, contractor, lived at 25 University St, London, with Emma Reid 25, his brother Robert N Reid 27, contractor, William G Reid 3, and his brother James Reid 25, contractor[3]
