1849 Advertisement: 'Sale of Valuable Planing, Drilling, Bolt Screwing, and Wheel Cutting Machines, Slide and Centre Lathes, Slide Rest. &c. JAMES SHAW, Thursday, the 18th day of October, 1849, at his Rooms, Lower King-street, Manchester, at eleven o clock the forenoon: PLANING MACHINE will plane 6 feet in length, 2 feet 8 inches in width, and take in ? feet 6 inches deep, self-acting in the vertical, angular, and horizontal cuts, by Joy ; bolt and nut-screwing machine, bed 6 feet 3 inches long, 18 inches wide, by 9 inches deep, with improved taps and dies from ¾ inch to 2 inches, by Vaughan ; 12-inch geared self-acting slide lathe, 20 feet long, 15 inches wide, by 11 inches deep, by ditto; 6-inch ditto, bed 7 feet long, 8 inches wide, 6 inches deep, by ditto ; two single speed vertical drilling machines, by ditto : wheel cutting machine, for spur wheels, will take in 16 inches diameter, by Whittaker and Nuttal; 10-inch geared centre lathe, 9-inch single speed ditto, 9-inch compound slide rest, one pair of screw stocks with taps and dies, two letter copying presses, and other effects .….'
