1897 Obituary[1][2]

We regret to learn of the death of Mr. James Spence, who was for 25 years on the engineering staff of Her Majesty's Dockyard at Portsmouth, and for another quarter of a century was a consulting engineer in Newcastle-on-Tyne, where he was widely known and highly respected.

He was born on February 15, 1816, and died on January 26, 1897, so that he had almost completed his eightieth year.
