Born the son of Thomas Watt (1642–1734), was a well-known teacher of mathematics, surveying, and navigation

1728 Married Agnes Muirhead, who came from a distinguished family and was well-educated. Both were Presbyterians and strong Covenanters.

1736 January 19th. Birth of son James Watt at Greenock

James and Agnes were buried in the churchyard of Greenock's West Church
