1838 Born son of James and Mary Young, engineer, in Ardwick, Lancs[1][2]

1852 Started work at Bathgate (for his father's business, Young, Meldrum and Binney), concentrating on research and management[3]

1861 James Young 20, chemist, lived in Bathgate with his aunt Marion Murray 47[4]

1886 Died at Kelly, Wemyss Bay; he left his estate to his brothers and sisters[5]
