"JOHN BALES HANSFORD was associated with gas engineering during the whole of his professional career, and had occupied the position of engineer and manager of the Bedford Gas Co for twenty-one years. His apprenticeship was served under Mr. E. C. J. Kerridge, civil engineer, of Weymouth, from 1900 to 1903, and at the Portland Gas Works from 1903 to 1905. After filling various temporary positions with gas undertakings and gas engineers he joined the staff of the Barnet District Gas and Water Co as a draughtsman in 1907, and in the following year was appointed works assistant to the manager. This position he retained until he went to Bedford to take up his final appointment, which he relinquished on his retirement in December 1939. Mr. Hansford had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1911. His death occurred at West Mersea, Essex, on 18th September 1948, in his sixty-third year."
