1869 John Beale patented the lever mechanism to propel a bicycle

1874 The first Facile bicycle using this mechanism was produced by Ellis and Co.

1878. 332. Bicycles, J. Beale. - Dated 25th January 1878. 6d. The fork is extended downwards beyond the axle of the wheel and radius rods are jointed to its lower end, the reverse ends of which are connected to the stirrups formed at the lower ends of two connecting-rods for working the cranks.
