"JOHN BERNARD NORRIS, whose death occurred in the Belgian Congo on 18th January 1950, at the age of fifty-four, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in the preceding year.
He was educated at the County High School, Isleworth, and served his apprenticeship from 1909 to 1914 with Messrs. D. Napier and Sons, Ltd., Acton. In 1915 he went to sea as marine engineer, and during the following nine years served in Admiralty transports and ships of the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company, Ltd., rising from junior to second engineer and obtaining his First-class Board of Trade Certificate.
During the 1914-18 war he was awarded a Lloyd's medal. After a short appointment as shift engineer to the Anglo-Egyptian Oilfields, Ltd., he went into business on his own account and established the Thrale Engineering Company, Ltd. In 1928 he entered upon the last phase of his career on joining the staff of the Huilever (S.A.) Company, in the Belgian Congo, and successively held the positions of district, area, and assistant chief engineer, until 1945, when he received his final appointment as chief engineer."
