JOHN BONAR had been in business since 1924 as an automobile and electrical engineer in Edinburgh. He was born at Stranraer in 1875 and served a five years' apprenticeship, commencing in 1889, in the workshops of the Ayrshire and Wigtownshire Railway. He then gained further practical experience as a mechanic in various printing works, and in 1898 he entered the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, where he studied until 1900. Subsequently he went to India as foreman millwright to Messrs. Burn and Company, Ltd., at the Howrah Iron Works, Bengal, and in 1904 he was appointed superintendent engineer of the Anglo-India Jute Mills Company. In 1906 he went to Cawnpore as works manager of the Empire Engineering Company, Ltd., and subsequently became superintendent engineer to the Allahabad Waterworks. He served in the Indian Defence Force during the War, and was stationed at Delhi as executive engineer of the Public Works Department from 1916 to 1920. In the following year he went to Siam, and joined the Anglo-Siam Corporation, with which he was associated until he established his own business in Edinburgh. Mr. Bonar was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1907 and was transferred to Membership in 1915. His death occurred in Edinburgh on 5th May 1937.
