1834 Sale Notice: 'Exempt from Duty.- To Dyers, Fustian Stiffeners, and Others.
By Mr. LEECH, on Monday the 22d day of September, 1834, at ten o'clock in the forenoon, on the premises in Cranage-street, Dawson's-croft, near to Greengate, in Salford, by order of the assignees of John Bowker, the elder, dyer, bankrupt; A VALUABLE assortment of Dyers' MACHINERY and two excellent cylinder drying machines, two large copper, iron, and lead pans, winces, and tubs, and the usual dyeing requisites, about 90 feet cast iron pipes, 2 to 6 inches diameter, old metal, large triangle, beam scales, and weights, counting-house fixtures, caravans, carts, geers, and other effects. Also, three valuable Cart Horses. The property may be viewed on Friday and Saturday preceding the sale, and further particulars had from the Auctioneer, or from Mr. Hitchcock, Solicitor, Manchester.'[1]
The 1849 O.S. map shows Cranage Street and a small dye works in the shadow of the L&NWR viaduct close to the River Irwell. In fact one corner of the dye works was under an arch.
