1802 With John Redpath, established a business of wholesale ironmongers, nail makers and iron merchants in Edinburgh
He was a pioneer in the design of wrought-iron suspension bridges.
1817 He designed a wire suspension footbridge of 110 feet span over the Tweed near Peebles, which was then constructed and used for more than a century.
1820 the style of the firm was altered to Redpath, Brown and Company.
