JOHN BULMER was born at Newburn, a small village near Newcastle-on-Tyne, on 7th April 1834.
At eight years of age he was put to work at one of the local collieries and from there to various engineering works, until in 1873 he commenced business with the late Mr. Wardhaugh, the firm being known as Wardhaugh and Bulmer.
In 1880 he entered upon the Spring Garden Engineering Works, Newcastle-on-Tyne, on his own behalf, where he made a speciality of wire and hemp rope-making machines, also machinery for making electrical wires and cables.
He gained by his inventive genius and excellent workmanship a world-wide reputation for his machines, which are now working not only in nearly all the rope-works in this country, but on the Continent and in America, Japan, and other countries.
His death took place at his residence in Newcastle-on-Tyne on 31st October 1903, after a day's illness, in his seventieth year.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1882.
