"JOHN CHANDLER. Wh.Ex.. was born in 1888 and served an apprenticeship from 1902 to 1908 in Portsmouth Royal Naval Dockyard. He obtained theoretical training in engineering from 1902 to 1913 at Portsmouth Municipal College of Technology, in the course of which he gained a Whitworth Exhibition. He began his professional career in 1908 as an engineering draughtsman in the Dockyard and after five years' experience was appointed H.M. Inspector of Factories. During the 1914-18 war he was first employed as engineer assistant to the technical adviser of the Ministry of Munitions in connection with the layout of factories; but in 1916 he was commissioned in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, and served with the rank of captain in the base workshops at Le Havre until 1920. The remainder of his life was spent as H.M. Inspector of Factories. Mr. Chandler had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1922. His death occurred in London on 10th October 1951."
