John Cleave (c1845-1926) of John Cleave and Sons

1926 Died. 'Kirtonians learnt with profound regret the death of Mr. John Cleave which took place at his residence, Wednesday, at the age of eighty-one years. Mr. J. Cleave was one of the biggest employers of labour the town, and carried on the business of a sweet and chocolate manufacturer. He was formerly Chairman of the Urban District Council, which office gave him seat on the Crediton Bench of Magistrates. He also took active part in connection with several public bodies in the town. Deceased leaves a widow and two sons, Mr. Stanley Cleave being the Under Sheriff for Exeter.'[1]
