Born the son of John Crombie (1772-1858) and his wife Catherine Harvey

1894 Died. 'The death of Mr John Crombie of Balgownie Lodge, senior partner the firm of Messrs J. & J. Crombie, Limited, woollen manufacturers, Grandholm Works, removes a striking personality from the mercantile community of Aberdeen. Mr Crombie had been in weak health for some time, and had been incapacitated from engaging actively in business, but the end came somewhat unexpectedly on the 16th inst. He had reached the age of 76 years. In the beginning of the century the firm of which Mr Crombie was the head was founded by his father, who started his career as a tweed manufacturer in the parish of Longside. The business was transferred to Cothal, where it developed under careful management, and eventually it was removed to Grandholm Works, where between 800 and 900 people are now employed. On the death of his father, Mr Crombie carried on the business for many years in company with his late brother James and was assisted in recent years by his sons...'[1]
