"JOHN DUNCAN ADIE, whose untimely death occurred on 6th March 1951 at the early age of thirty-six, was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1939 and transferred to Associate Membership two years later. He was educated at the Airdrie Academy Secondary School and the Coatbridge Technical College.
His apprenticeship was served with Messrs. Murray and Paterson, Ltd., Coatbridge, engine builders, from 1930 to 1935, in whose employment he continued as a designer for a further three years. He then received an appointment as chief engineer and assistant general works manager to Messrs. B. Whitaker and Sons, Ltd., Leeds, with responsibility for the production of seven brickworks and quarries. He also found time to act as lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the Leeds College of Technology and the Morley Technical Institute. In 1945 he became technical manager to the Leeds Piston Ring Engineering Company, Ltd., but two years later he was obliged to go into retirement owing to ill health."
