MAJOR JOHN FREDERICK ADOLPHUS McNAIR, C.M.G., R.A., born at Bath on the 23rd October, 1828, died at Brighton on the 17th May, 1910.
Obtaining his commission in 1845, he became in 1856 staff officer in the Straits Settlements. Subsequently he was appointed Comptroller of Indian convicts and Surveyor-Genera1 to the Colony, in which capacity he carried out important public works in Singapore. During the disturbances of 1875-1876 he was Special Commissioner to Perak, receiving the medal with clasp, and later he took part in special missions to Siam and officiated for some years as Lieutenant-Governor of Penang.
He was elected an Associate of The Institution of the 3rd December, 1872.
