Sir John George Barton (c1851-1937)

1937 Obituary[1]

1937 'THE death is announced at the age 86 of a distinguished Old Reptonian— Sir John George Barton. He was at the school during the headmastership of Dr. Pears, and left to study engineering. One of an old Irish family, his father was already a member the Council of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Sir John, whose knighthood came to him in 1902, was largely engaged in railway engineering, and he became an inspector under the old Board of Works. Later, he was Government arbitrator under the Board Trade for light railways in Ireland, and he held other important offices in his native land, until his retirement into private life in 1916.'[2]
