John Hacking (1740-1805)
of Huncoat
1740 March 15th. baptised at Clitheroe the son of James hacking and his wife Ann.
1772, invented the first carding engine for cotton
1805 November 10th. Died. Altham churchyard memorial "To the memory of John and Ellen Hacking, who invented and made the first carding engine, and turned it by hand. They carded cotton wool for their neighbors in Huncoat in the year 1772."[1][2]
