1895 Fire. 'About three o'clock this afternoon, alarming fire broke out the now factory, Accrington, belonging to Messrs. John Hargreaves and Co., one of the largest cotton spinning and manufacturing places in the district. The fire broke out in the spinning portion of the premises, a large block four storeys high and about 20 windows long. It was in the top storey, where there are three pairs of looms, that the outbreak occurred, the cause of being friction. The fire spread rapidly, and by the time the fire brigade arrived the top portion of the building was throwing out great masses of smoke and fire. Fortunately each department is fire-proof, and the outbreak was confined the top storey. There was plentiful supply of water, and in less than an hour the fire had been almost extinguished. The damage will be considerable. All the work people got out of the mill in safety, but the news the fire caused great alarm in the town, and large crowd assembled.'
