c.1845 Apprenticed under his father, who was manager at Messrs. Pimms (sic), Hull, and built twelve screw steamers, engines, and boilers before the paddle steamer Leipzic.

Was responsible for working up iron and steel for boilermaking in both in Royal Dockyards and private firms.
