MR. JOHN J. SAVILLE
We regret to announce the death of Mr. John James Savile [sic], which occurred at his residence, Tapton Cliffe, Sheffield, yesterday. The deceased was amongst the best known of Sheffield’s steel manufacturers, and though, as he had suffered from serious illness for many months, his end was not altogether unexpected, the news of his death will none the less cause deep regret to a large of friends and acquaintances.
Mr. Saville was born in Sheffield 54 years ago, being the son of Mr. George Saville, of Pitsmoor. His first business experience was obtained with Messrs. Peace Brothers, file makers, of Garden street, to whom he was apprenticed. Afterwards he travelled for the Sheffield Steel Manufacturing Company, and also spent some time in Germany. Twenty-six years since, then a young man of 28, Saville started in business on his own account as a steel and file manufacturer, taking premises first in Wicker lane. A man of keen business ability and unflagging seal, he was soon to compelled to seek a more extended field for his enterprise, and ultimately purchased the buildings then known as the Norfolk Foundry, occupied by Messrs. J. C. And J. S. Ellis. The present premises of Messrs. J. J. Saville and Co. are built on this site. The firm also own steel works in Russia, this being one of the most recent expansions of the concern.
Mr. Saville was above all things a man of business, and as he travelled a great deal in the interests of the firm of which he was head, he had little time for devotion to public or semi-public duties. He was a Conservative. a Churchman, and a Freemason. It was sixteen months since that asthma compelled him to give up many of the activities to which he was accustomed and since August last he had been confined to his house. He leaves a widow, two daughters, and a son.

In the promotion of his business, Mr. Saville travelled in many lands, and in social circles in his native city he had numerous friends, who will mourn his death. Formerly he resided in Clarkehouse Road, but a few years back he left there for Tapton Cliffe, which he very much enlarged and improved.
