"JOHN JOSEPH HEYES, whose death occurred on 20th January 1949, at the age of fifty-seven, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1928. In addition he was a Member of the Institution of Naval Architects. He served his apprenticeship with Messrs. R. T. Heyes and Company, Ltd., engineers and boiler makers, of Liverpool, from 1907 to 1912, and concurrently attended classes at the Liverpool City Technical College. After gaining further experience with the same firm, as engineer and machinist, he was engaged on surveys for Lloyds and the Board of Trade, and during the war of 1914-18 was in charge of the fitting out and repairs to all classes of ships for the Admiralty.
In 1918 he became managing director of the Pearlite Electric Welding Co, of Liverpool, but four years later he returned to Messrs. R. T. Heyes and Company to take up similar duties.
He remained with that firm for some twelve years, and during this period he was also a director of the Premier Electric Welding Co. In 1934 he began to practise on his own account and two years later became, in addition, general manager of the British Arc Welding Co of Liverpool."
